This week in church we are started a nine week study on discipleship via Dietrich Bonheoffer’s book, The Cost of Discipleship. I read this book back in 8th grade and had a difficult time grasping what he was saying, but after many years I’m sure it will be a more rewarding experience. Anyways… On Sunday, Pastor Dave’s sermon focused on cheap grace vs. costly grace. To highlight the point of costly grace, P.D. used the following verse:

Do not give what is holy to dogs; and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under foot and turn and maul you. Matthew 7:6

This verse has never made much sense to me. After hearing the sermon, however, it is beginning to take root!

I must confess and ask for forgiveness for those in my 20-somethings generation… We’ve taken so much for granted. I know we shouldn’t blame circumstances… But (as so many like to point out) we’ve had so much provided for us. We haven’t had to struggle for much. Things aren’t nearly as rough on the home-front here in the U.S. as they were in the past (in some ways).

So naturally with being surrounded by an abundance of everything, we’re going to take a lot of it for granted.
It’s unfortunate that that also applies to God’s grace.

We take grace lightly because we fail to count the cost. We take our freedom lightly because it’s hard for us to grasp the price so many before us paid to protect us. We take our parents lightly because we don’t understand the sacrifices they have made in raising us. Forgive us all, Lord.

When we count the cost, there arises a deep-seated gratitude that erupts into a desire to pour forth and give back.

Grace has so many different facets. A baseline fact is that one of the results of Jesus laying down His all is for us to be covered in God’s grace. Let’s briefly think about this… Jesus, after being in heaven for who knows how many years, came to us in the form of a baby. He left the glory of God in heaven and came to us in flesh. Now I’ve heard near-death encounters of people having glimpses of heaven and not wanting to return to earth. Imagine what it would be like to have been in heaven, then coming down here to live for a period of time! He walked on this earth and grew as all of us have. Around the age of thirty His ministry began and I’m sure most of us know the story of His suffering, death, burial, and resurrection.

What about the hours before the crucifixion? In His suffering, Christ’s friends abandoned Him. Life feels empty and lonely without friends. I can’t imagine going through the worst possible time and having your friends fall asleep and run from you. Ouch. Jesus was scorned, mocked, and beaten. Try putting yourself in His shoes. See what it feels like. Yet He silently stood strong out of love. Then the whipping. The crown of thorns? How about the nails in the wrists and feet? Oh, and don’t forget about being displayed on a cross for all to see. At this point Christ is marred beyond recognition and has a spear stuck in His side. Death. Then came the glorious resurrection!

This all happened that we would have life as lived by grace.

Failing to keep in mind Christ as risen from the grave causes grace to be cheap. We lightly come back for more and don’t hold it as the precious, wonderful gift that Christ died in order to give us.

I pray that God would open up all of our eyes to understand the high price Jesus paid for us. From seeing this in a deeper, more meaningful manner, I believe that our hearts will be so riveted and moved to display our gratitude in a unique manner. Maybe you’ll write a song about it. Maybe you’ll just get on your knees in thankfulness to God. Maybe you’ll offer it to someone else who desperately needs some grace. Either way these are all expressions of our gratitude to our Creator.

God, please help us to count the cost of the cross, of the price Jesus paid for us. Just as we would hold a valuable treasure with the utmost care and consideration, help us to hold the grace You have blessed with in the same manner. May the wonder of Your sacrifice be truly felt in our hearts, so that we might feel and share in the immense power. In Jesus’ wonderful name. Amen.

The title of this blog is ‘Faith.’ One word. No strings attached.

In all of its simplicity, faith is loyalty to, belief in, and trust in something. It is the essence of part of our lives. Maybe you’re a boss and have faith in your employees. Maybe you’re a child and have faith in your parents. Maybe you’re a teacher and have faith in your students.

But above all else, transcending any person or thing here on earth, do you have faith in the One?

If you do…

You are radically blessed!

The first couple of chapters in Romans are oozing with talk of faith, and I encourage you to take a look at them! Chapter 4 focuses a lot on Abraham. Verses 2, 3, 13, and 14 tell us that:

“2 If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God. 3 What does Scripture say? ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.’ … 13 It was not through law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. 14 For if those who live by law are heirs, faith has no value and the promise is worthless. ”

Breaking this down a little, it is noticeable that Abraham was made right with God not because of his good deeds or his accomplishments here on earth, but because he had faith in God and acted upon his beliefs! Abraham was put in right standing with God because he trusted Him! Abraham was declared righteous because he believed God!

Isn’t that astounding?! We are made righteous through faith.

Thinking of the word righteous, some attainable, unreachable standard comes to mind. It comes off as being for a select few. But the amazing thing is that righteousness is for all of us! All because faith levels the playing field!

Therefore, [inheriting] the promise is the outcome of faith and depends [entirely] on faith, in order that it might be given as an act of grace (unmerited favor), to make it stable and valid and guaranteed to all his descendants—not only to the devotees and adherents of the Law, but also to those who share the faith of Abraham, who is [thus] the father of us all. Romans 4:16, AMP

Anyone can choose to believe! Faith in Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, is for everybody! Regardless of where anyone has been or what has been done, anyone at all is free to believe in God and take Him at His Word.

God’s Word… so full of promises. God’s Word… so full of life. It is all there. Believe in Jesus and you believe in God’s Word made flesh (John 1:14). Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). Through the Truth in God’s Word we are pointed in the Way we should go, which leads to Life. If we would believe this Word at all costs, imagine what glorious things await!

Faith takes away any selfish ties. Faith puts it all on our Savior Jesus. Faith has everything to do with a focus on God. When we live our lives constantly beholding the One Who is righteous, in turn we are made righteous! No, we will never have perfect performance. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). But God is righteous, holy, and always faithful to us. So when we keep our hope set on the One, we become like Him! All we have to do is believe God at His Word. Trust that what He says is true. We are in right standing with God when we trust in Him—perfect and spotless. There is nothing in and of ourselves! Search the Scripture and see how God has shown Himself faithful to us! He will never fail us, forsake us, or let us down (Hebrews 13:5)!

God can truly be trusted!

We are told that faith without works is dead (James 2:17-26). However, the works we do should not be out of striving for acceptance or approval from the Lord. I want to share with you something by Joyce Meyer. I feel that it brings faith and works into a very healthy perspective.

If we have real faith, we will do good works, but our dependence will not be on works. Our works will be done as acts of love for God—in obedience to Him—rather than as “works of the flesh” by which we hope to gain right standing and acceptance with Him. (Pg. 1806, The Everyday Life Bible)

I believe that if we truly believe the Lord and are secure in our place as God’s own children, then we will act in accordance with our beliefs. By walking in obedience to God’s calling, we act in faith because we trust in His Word to reign in our lives.

Keep the faith!!!

Lately I’ve been interested in, enamored by, and puzzled by the voice of God. Maybe I’m making it too complex. God speaks to us all. He can’t be limited! His Word, people, circumstances, nature, and so many things surrounding us are all vehicles through which God communicates to us. God help us to see Him and hear Him in the midst of it all!

What I want to focus on, however, is God speaking to us—directly and personally. Countless times in the Bible we read, “And God said…” and “And the Lord of the Lord came to me…” on and on. Noah, Abraham, David, Ezekiel, Mary, and a number of others are recorded in a beautiful picture as hearing from God, being faithful in obedience, and walking in the great things of God’s will for them.

Isn’t there tremendous potential for us all? If those who heard God’s voice walked in great things in the Lord, can’t we all?! It’s part of the giant wonder of walking close to Jesus, of being led and guided by His voice, through the Holy Spirit in us.

It is part of our inheritance and our right as being included in the family of God to hear His voice! We have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. Think about the unlimited potential. God told Noah to build an arc. The flood came. An angel came to Mary and spoke to her. She was impregnated. What earth-shattering things will God speak to each and every one of us?

Since God Himself is in us, why is it sometimes so hard to get in tune with His heart and really come to know what He is saying? This radical Being that created the universe is in us, and yet how often do we fail to recognize Him throughout the day? Jesus walked in such power here on earth. He was a human like us, and He too had the Holy Spirit. He calls us to go out and make disciples, and I firmly believe that as we spend time with Him in prayer, worship, and His Word, we will be closer to Him and clearly come to know His voice. May the cares of the world not choke out His word in us. (See the likes of Matthew 13:22, Mark 4:19, and Luke 21:34)

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for Your voice! Your creative and powerful voice which created all in this universe now resides and dwells in us! Lord, please open our ears and clean them out so that we can clearly hear You. Teach us to discern your voice with clarity and confidence

And just as You spoke to Elijah in a still, small voice, so help us to be still and quiet before You in the same manner. Help us clear out the clutter in our minds and honor Your voice.

I pray that You would lead us down Your perfect path into great things wherever we are! In Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Psalm 29
1 All of you angels in heaven, honor the glory and power of the Lord!
2 Honor the wonderful name of the Lord, and worship the Lord most holy and glorious.
3 The voice of the Lord echoes over the oceans. The glorious Lord God thunders above the roar of the raging sea,
4 and his voice is mighty and marvelous.
5 The voice of the Lord destroys the cedar trees; the Lord shatters cedars on Mount Lebanon.
6 God makes Mount Lebanon skip like a calf and Mount Hermon jump like a wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord makes lightning flash
8 and the desert tremble. And because of the Lord, the desert near Kadesh shivers and shakes.
9 The voice of the Lord makes deer give birth before their time. Forests and the temple is filled with shouts of praise.
10 The Lord rules on his throne, king of the flood forever.
11 Pray that our Lord will make us strong and give us peace.

John 10:27

God is the master organizer! Have you ever really thought about it? From the galaxies and planets, the stars in their place, the earth with the water, sea, and sky, all the peoples and nations, down to the microscopic array of the composition of atoms, God had it all organized and planned beforehand. Even the changing of the seasons is organization for the cycle of nature. The human life spans many seasons and many overlap. A woman goes through a cycle each month. All of this has a purpose.

In Ecclesiastes 3 we read:

1 To everything there is a season, and a time for every matter or purpose under heaven:
2 A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted,
3 A time to kill and a time to heal, a time to break down and a time to build up,
4 A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5 A time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones together, a time to embrace and a time to
refrain from embracing,
6 A time to get and a time to lose, a time to keep and a time to cast away,
7 A time to rend and a time to sew, a time to keep silence and a time to speak,
8 A time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace
…
11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He also has planted eternity in men’s hearts and
minds [a divinely implanted sense of a purpose working through the ages which nothing under the
sun but God alone can satisfy], yet so that men cannot find out what God has done from the
beginning to the end.

Additionally, in Psalm 31:15, King David writes that, “My times are in Your hands…”

I feel like my current way of going about daily life is being totally shaken up. Some moments it is hard to tell which way is up and which way is down. I mean this mostly in regards to my thought life. God takes us all through seasons of change, which is definitely a good thing. All we need to do is cooperate and trust that God is right there with us (see Heb. 13:5), thus allowing Him to work His awesomeness.

I admit to being a person who doesn’t particularly care for change (in some regards). After coming to know some people who enjoy changing various things frequently, I’ve come to appreciate their adaptability and ability to improve for the better by trying something new. It is such an admirable quality and keeps things new, fresh, and alive. There is much to be said on both ends of the spectrum. We were made in God’s image and likeness, right? So on one hand we have our unchangeable, fixed Rock in heaven, Who is always the same. But this very great I AM is also always doing a NEW work in us—His people. We all have the hope of being with the Lord, of really knowing Him! In the Bible it says that, “What we know is that when Christ is openly revealed, we’ll see him—and in seeing him, become like him. All of us who look forward to his Coming stay ready, with the glistening purity of Jesus’ life as a model for our own.” (1 John 3:2, The Message) So if in actually seeing Christ at His return we become like Him and resemble Him, then in the meantime we are continually in the process of being prepared and refined; we are ever in the process of renewal, and it is at Christ’s coming that we will fully become like Him, for we shall see Him exactly as He really is! All of us, in order to prepare us for Christ’s coming and to fully meet Him, are taken along many and unique paths to get us to our final destination—an eternity with the Lord!

Sometimes change occurs subtly and without our knowing; other times it is stunningly shattering. Being aware of such shaking up is hard to grasp onto, but with knowing that the Lord is the only firmly fixed One we have gives great hope and strength to endure until the very end.

No matter what you’re going through, please continue hanging on. The Lord has every moment, every breath of your life, in His precious timing. Our times are in Your hands…

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the grand elegance of Your creation! Every facet of it was thought of and planned beforehand. What an amazing thing to think about! Thank You for the times and seasons You have made. Give us Your grace and Spirit to trust every moment of our lives into Your timing. Please help us to rest easy, knowing that YOU very well know what is going on every moment of our lives, that nothing at all escapes Your notice. So much praise goes to You alone, God!!! In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
