Being the person I am, some days are just better than others. Today is one of those better days, and Good News First “Finding A Way Out” is one of the reasons. I stumbled across this band from Madison Wisconsin via their Myspace page and after listening to a couple of their songs I knew I was going to be playing them on my show. When I was lucky enough to get the entire CD I knew a review was in order.
“Good news First” lists themselves as Pop/Punk and that is a good description. Their music is upbeat and with lead vocal from Kacey Henkelmen the band has a sound that is both catchy without being kitsch and still somehow reminding me of early 90’s rock. The Music has a serious Blink182 sound and while it is clear that all 5 songs are the same band they are separate enough that I didn’t feel like I was listening to one long song. It is clear that this is a group of people who really enjoy playing together. Here is Video of the song Never look back.
One of the things that so many indie bands suffer from is that the recording quality of their music simply doesn’t stand up to those in major media. This is one of the reasons while I judge the indie CD’s on a different scale than a Skillet/TFK/Fireflight CD. There were a few times when the music overpowered the vocals. Other than this small matter the CD rather well put together, and I have often wondered just what bands with this kind of talent would sound like if the CD was produced by the likes of a Howard Benson. Overall I really enjoy the CD. I am looking forward to hearing more from this band and I am sure they would be well worth seeing live.
I am giving Finding A way out an Indie Rating of 4.0 out of 5.0 stars. Check out their Myspace Page and listen for yourself. I’m betting you’ll agree and add Good news First to your collection.
