This weeks CD’s review is the Self-Titled EP put out by the band Fellow. This 5 song rock experience makes for a great change from so many rock bands who think that by calling themselves a rock band must mean screaming guitars and lyrics that can only be understood by reading the notes on the inside of the CD. With lead vocals from Johanna Miller, mixture of moody female vocals along with driving music and meaningful lyrics still tends to please my ear. Here is a bit of the song “Dont Ignore me”.

Hidden from all eyes and ears
I fade into the fearsome darkness
morning comes to light my path
I suffer slowly screaming silence

the quartet consists of
Johanna Miller on Lead vocals and keyboard
Jake Miller on Guitar
Jonathan Hendrickson on Bass, Guitar and BGV
Zach Cowherd on drum.

This Group writes and plays songs that are not vague in their intent. While life is hard and a struggle, God is there for all of us. The Message is clear and is nicely woven through all the songs on the CD, turning the EP into a single theme that brings all of the songs together. This does cause the CD to suffer in that the style of all of the songs on the CD are very similar. Not so similar that I found my checking the playlist to she which song was playing but similar enough that you will notice it if you play the cd straight through as I did, and it is only at the last of the 5 songs that you really notice a change in style.

So it should come as no surprise that this song was the one I choose as my favorite on the CD. The Title of the song is fear and you can hear the whole song in the audio version of the Review. The words of the song make the meaning crystal clear

God I need you
This feels to near
Please come and rescue me from my fear

I’m giving the EP a 3.75 out of 5 stars. There just wasn’t enough variety for me, especially in an EP where I have always felt the band should trying to show what they are capable of and from what I heard on the CD I believe that Fellow is Capable of much more than they showed on the CD, Still, aside from this minor flaw I found myself wishing there was another 5 songs on the CD. I look forward to when the band puts out a full length album.
