I, for one, am really happy to be reviewing this CD. I want to thank my Pastor (Thanks Dave) for introducing me to the music of Eowyn. Little did I know when I got his email about this girl named Eowyn (pronounced A_O_WIN - Yeah like from Lord of the Rings, it seems her Dad was a huge fan of the books before they were made into movies.) that she would quickly become one of my favorite Indie Christian Artists. You see by this time I had already listened to a lot of mediocre music so when I first heard Eowyn on her myspace page I was blown away by the music I heard but I was also worried that this young artist would suffer from the syndrome that seems so prevalent in music today. I was worried that all her music would sound the same. I am very happy to find that I was wrong. I never felt like I had to look at the track list to see what song was playing. Each song has its own feel and own soul. The Playlist is as follows:
Crashing
Life
To my Surprise
Silent Screams (Featuring Rob Beckley of Pillar)
Runaway
Unfinished Memories
Hands of Time
Significant
Saving Grace
Goodbye
The level of energy in this CD was amazing, Running the gambit from rabid rock to haunting melody I found the music in this CD to be outstripped only by the lyrics. Lyrics that match seamlessly with the music. Eowyn is obviously an extremely talented singer. The production on this CD is very well done, Credits list Produced mixed, mastered, and engineered by Travis Wyrick with additional engineering by Mike Dearing. One of the common problems I have been finding with Indie Produced Music is a lack of Level control, meaning that I would have to turn one song up and another down on the same CD. This was not a problem here, as well as the music and vocals being crystal clear.
Two songs really stood out to me. The first is the Title song, “Silent Screams” this rocking song also features the talent of Rob Beckley from the Band Pillar. This is an emotionally charged anthem that really speaks to me. The imagery of people suffering in silence and how we are called to reach out to those who are suffering is so clear and the song is such a call to action for me.
“When Silent Screams cried out
Will we reach them now?
It’s time to Scream out loud
Will we reach them now?“
The second song is the haunting and beautiful “To My Surprise” This song really shows the vocal talent of Eowyn. In a mostly hard and rocking CD this song and “Unfinished memories” offer up a pleasant aside. This song speaks to the need we all have for forgiveness.
“To My surprise You heard my cries
Lord Jesus rescue me
To my surprise you gave your life
Lord Jesus Rescue me“
In a time where many of the “Christian Musicians” seem to try and minimize the role of Christianity in their music or public image I find it refreshing to find a young lady creating what can only be called hard in your face rock with a in your face faith as well. I am giving this CD 4.5 stars out of 5 and will say that the only thing about the entire CD I had a problem with was the Song order, I felt the CD ended a little off and perhaps a change in the order would fix that, however in the Itunes / MP3 player generation one hardly ever listens to an entire CD in the play order. so this really is a minor drawback.
Eowyn will be playing the summer slam fest in Derry Pa and I will look forward not only seeing her live but also getting the chance to interview her and you can believe I will be bringing you that Interview.
