Today I am reviewing The CD from Brent Cole titled “Good Love” I have little doubt that this CD was conceived as a worship project, and in that light this CD excels. On the inner sleeve of the CD Brent wrote “Worship Breaks Us Down Into Our Simplest Form. We are Created to Worship.” and it is this statement that I feels sets the tone and texture of this CD. Cd baby lists this CD as:
“Contemporary music revolving around love and life, led by an acoustic sound; Brent Cole, singer/songwriter brings a refreshing quality to the stage and Christian Music scene. With honest lyrics and catchy melodies.”
And continues with:
“Recommended if you like Third Day, Hootie & the Blowfish.“
I find this to be very accurate. I could hear both of the bands as influences in the music from this CD.
I originally found Brent Cole on Indie heaven while I was searching for music to play on the Podcast (www.jtindie.com) His music is acoustic and he has a voice that complements the straightforward style very well. The album as a whole is textured with the songs being individual enough for me to notice when one song ended and another started. We listened to the CD in the car on the way to the Summer Slam Fest, with those listening being Myself, Mike X, and our Pastor Dave. This is a rather interesting mix of people with Dave being a Musician, Mike tends toward the Heavier music. All of agreed that music was well done. One made the comment that several of the songs could easily be in the vein on Country Music. This is by no means meant to be taken as a negative, just the opposite, I find that music that isn’t made to match the popular pablum formula to be refreshing.
What this Cd feels like to me is that Brent took the songs that held power for him and he took those songs and made the best CD he could make. While it is clear to me that he has talent as a musician and vocalist, it is even clearer to me that it is his passion for the music and, more importantly, the message that makes this CD enjoyable to listen to. I really enjoy the songs “Come thou Fount” (Which has always been one of my favorite hymns) and the Title Track “Good Love”
I will say that while this CD is Good solid music, It isn’t Great. I enjoyed the CD and will continue to enjoy it but it seemed that the CD was just lacking something, That mysterious something that pushes A good CD into Greatness. Some of the songs were predictable even if they were enjoyable. The last song on the CD brings everything back around. The Song is “Adopted” and at 7:08 seconds long it is the kind of song I look for as a reviewer and have come to hate as a podcaster. songs of this length mean I may have to choose between playing this one song or playing two songs in its place, so not only does a long song have to be good, it has to be better than two other songs. This song. Adopted, is simple with just Guitar and Piano, and lyrics. This song achieves where all the other songs just fall short, this song is powerful. Speaking of being adopted into the family of God he sings “The only word know is Please, So don’t turn your face from me” The CD Insert does not include the words to the songs which I found to be a bit disconcerting.
Over all I am giving the CD a score of 3.5 stars out of 5, Like I said it is a good solid CD, one which I will happily listen to again in the future and all the songs are ones I will look forward to playing on my podcast (even the long one) All the songs were good solid songs. Something was just missing.
