When this CD showed up in the mail I was in the middle of moving everything I owned from a two bedroom apartment to pretty much a single room. I found that getting rid of almost everything I owned a very Zen Practice. Now you may be wondering just what any of this has to do with The newest album by Amy Courts Titled These Cold and Rusted Lungs. Well I am happy to say that this Cd was one of the things that made a traumatic move like this possible. The music was a great comfort and Amy’s Voice is something that gets inside you, past all the walls and scars of the years. Several times as I was packing and listening to this CD I found myself just sitting still and allowing the music to flow over me. This music is destined to have a permanent place on my MP3 player.

With bits of Leigh Nash and Nora Jones this…. How do I refer to this voice? I went to Thesaurus reference on the web and typed in the word singer, hoping for a word that would describe Amy Courts. On the list I found the word “Poet” and that is what Amy is a Vocal Poet. Her turn of phrase and choice of words paints mental pictures that are clear and rich in detail. Several of her songs caused me to stop and really listen to the lyrics. The Final song on the CD speaks of Unrequited Love and could easily be called the JustTerry song as it seems to tell my story in scary detail. Here is part of the Song:

We tried and we tried…
You won’t apologize and I won’t wait for you to make amends
I want your love but I don’t want it if its only as a friend
we gave it everything and nothings quite enough
But its never quite that simple when I’m letting go

I really doubt there is anyone reading this who cannot identify with those words, and feel the emotion behind them. This is why I have chosen to refer to Amy Courts as a Vocal Poet.

I found the Album to be Very well recorded and produced. Perhaps my favorite part of the CD is the opening of the song “Stand” Track-6 that is nothing more than a deep rich piano and her voice, that leaves me breathless each time I hear it. Still don’t think that Amy is all lyrical litheness, the girl can wail! as proven in track 8 “Shiver” The CD runs the Gambit from lilting melodies to alt-pop rock. This leads me to the one negative I have about the CD, when listened to the album as a whole the order of the music feels a little strange. Going from A capella “Holy God” to rocking “Shiver” to Acoustic and melodic “Inevitable” left me feeling a little out of sorts. The individual songs are each well done and a pleasure to listen to but put in that order I find myself jangled by them. These days this is a very minor problem with the advent of MP3 players and programmable play lists.

With all this said it is easy to see why I have chosen to Give “These Cold and Rusted Lungs” A rating of 4 stars out of 5. This is an album that I will no doubt pull out and listen to for the pleasure of the music, but it is also an album I will pull out and listen to for the message and the comfort it brings. You can be sure that these are songs you will hear on my podcast in the future.
